15 Greatest Episodes Of The Walking Dead
9. Clear (Season 3, Episode 12)
Before seasons seven and eight milked Morgan's inner turmoil to death, there was season three's Clear. Like Still, Clear is a small and quiet episode more concerned with character than it is with sweeping shots of walkers and onslaughts of violence.
The episode finds Rick, Michonne and Carl (Chandler Riggs) heading into town to look for weapons they can use against The Governor.
There, the trio come across a heavily fortified and booby-trapped house, where they're attacked by a masked gunman. After knocking him unconscious, Rick elects to keep him alive once he realises who it is: Morgan, far removed from the man he was in the first season. Heavily armed, insane, deep in grief and broken, his son's death has caused a complete deterioration of his mental state.
This story allows Lennie James to show off his explosive acting chops, and it's obvious watching it play out why they would eventually bring Morgan back as a main character.
Clear also features a nice sub-plot in which Michonne and Carl bond for the first time, and the results are beautiful.
Overall, Clear is the kind of episode the show does when it wants to take a backseat from the violence and walker onslaught. A deep, meaningful meditation on how people change when pushed, it's season three's crowning achievement and one of the show's most effective entries.
