15 Star Trek LEGO Sets Everyone Wants

12. USS Protostar

Let it never be said that Star Trek hasn't attempted to cater for a wide audience. The Animated Series first tried to bring in a younger generation, and more recently, Prodigy.

Offering up a set that reflects Trek's modern iterations is just as important as a Defiant or a Voyager. This one might be suited more to a mid-range price bracket, with more of a play element to it than distinctly display only.

The USS Protostar is a ship that is packed with features, and its small size means that a set would have lots of things to work with. It might not be plausible to make it mini-fig scale, but the interior of the bridge, for one, would need to be realised, given the wraparound viewscreen. At the bottom, the Protostar would require some fold-out landing gear and a forward cargo bay ramp opening to reveal a shuttle and the Runaway. The biggest piece of engineering to achieve in brick form, though, is the backend. The novelty factor with the Protostar is its unique drive with the nacelles lowering and the rear opening up to show its quadrant crossing engine.

It might sacrifice a lot of internal space to fully realise this element of the ship, but it does make it more than just "another" ship model.

Janeway might appear again at some point, and let's leave her to have a coffee cup there. Gwyn would need her heirloom in its sword form, Rok with some piece of engineering equipment, and Murph could be in his gelatinous state and able to be clipped to the back of other figures as some form of goopy backpack.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
