20 Best TV Comedy Characters Of The 21st Century

7. Michael Scott - The Office

The Office US
NBC

At the beginning, Steve Carell wasn't exactly a household name, which is probably a good thing. If the show had started after his breakout film The 40 Year Old Virgin, the role would have likely fallen to someone else. Thankfully, despite the new found fame, Carell stayed on with the show for seven seasons.

It could have been a longer tenure however. In a recent interview, one of the crew members spilled the real story behind Carell's departure. It turns out that it was actually a big understanding, with the actor never officially stating he wished to leave. However once the contract lapsed and the network didn't follow up, he took it to mean he was no longer needed for the show.

While obviously based on his British counterpart, Michael Scott was very much his own character. The inappropriate behavior made for some incredible moments and his time on the show is fondly remembered as The Office's best years.
