Perhaps the explanation for Fargo's slightly weaker year lies in Legion, another strange, idiosyncratic, well-acted, and beautifully shot TV show from the mind of Noah Hawley.

Inspired by the Marvel comic book and ostensibly linked to some part of the X-Men universe, this is a comic book TV show like no other. Indeed, for the most part you wouldn't associate it with superheroes or mutants, and that plays to the series' strength.

Instead of being a mutant drama, it unfolds as a depiction of mental health, with its patient one David Haller, played by Dan Stevens in mesmerising fashion. He's been in and out of care with schizophrenia, but IS also a mutant, and the show uses that to blur the lines between reality and fiction to great effect.

There are some superpowers on show, including a stunning one-shot early on, but this is more concerned with characters and mystery, including a gloriously twisted turn from Aubrey Plaza, and is perfectly complemented by the camera work, kaleidoscopic visuals, and score which all combine to lend a cognitive dissonance that leaves viewers as confused as David at times, but constantly enthralled.
