20 Best TV Shows Of 2017

13. Master Of None

Master of None took a year off after its critically acclaimed first season, but returned in 2017 and went from good to great.

It's a sitcom of rare ambition, and what's more is that for the most part it pulls off everything it strives for. It's a dreamy, artistic love-letter to everything from food to Italian cinema to New York City, but also contains some of the most true-to-life - and funny - commentaries on dating and relationships.

The show carefully handles topics such as race and religion with equal amounts of comedy and pathos, and this year Aziz Ansari grew into his role as its leading everyman and was impossible not to like.

He's assisted by a fine cast of supporting and guest stars, and the series itself oozes with charm and confidence. It's hard to think of another show that could have a black-and-white episode, one that goes through two decades of Thanksgivings and deals with coming out in such a measured manner, and yet another that leaves all the known characters behind to follow random stories across New York, including an extended, silent, and hilarious deaf sequence. Forget the title, it masters them all.
