4. Giant Green Hand - Star Trek Beyond

A fun reference to The Original Series episode "Who Mourns for Adonais?", Simon Pegg's Scotty cites a "giant green hand" as one possible explanation for the disappearance of the USS Franklin in Star Trek Beyond.

The hand itself appeared in the aforementioned TOS episode and later appears in the closing credits of Star Trek Beyond.

Early production artwork by Nadia Tzuo shows a much more naturalistic Apollo's hand, using formations similar to the real-life Pillars of Creation for fingers. While the hand that would appear in the finished film would hew closer to The Original Series effect, the use of real space imagery to create the hand was a clever approach that would've fit perfectly in the Kelvin Timeline's striking, colorful end credits sequences.
