20 Mind-Blowing Facts About It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

5. The Guillermo del Toro Cameo

It's sometimes hard to keep track of the McPoyle family simply because the number of members they have. The McPoyles are definitely the weirdest characters on Sunny and have built up quite a strong cult following, which is pretty apt when you think of the cult-like actions of the family on the show. The season eight episode 'The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre' introduced Sunny fans to a whole new set of McPoyles, including the gibberish-spouting, heavily-bearded Pappy McPoyle. What some people might not know is that Pappy McPoyle was played by acclaimed film director Guillermo Del Toro. Charlie Day played a supporting role in Del Toro's film Pacific Rim and it was on that set that the director let slip that he was a big fan of Sunny and would love to be a guest on the show. Day wasn't sure if he was being serious but after sending him an email and getting confirmation that Del Toro was in fact serious everything was set up and Pappy McPoyle was born. It was a short but memorable scene and Sunny fans got a big kick from seeing the Pans Labyrinth creator appearing on the show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQcsQ3Rj-0Y
