Of course, Jack wasn't originally meant to have an episode count greater than one. To cement Lost€™'s place as a shocking, unpredictable show, the monster was meant to kill him instead of the pilot in the series opener.

To up the shock factor, Michael Keaton was cast as Jack; how could this plucky young show kill off such a big actor so flippantly? ABC didn't like the idea of the character fans were most interested in being offed, so the writers changed the victim, much to Keaton'€™s distaste. He didn't fancy being part of a long running show so left, making way for Matthew Fox and a much more proactive, alive Jack.
