20 Amazing TV Plot Twists You Wish You Could Relive

12. Westworld - Bernard Is A Host

Westworld is by far and away one of the worst things HBO has ever done, but that's not to say that it was all bad. Alongside the strong cast and impressive visuals, it did have some clever twists - especially this one.

At the end of season one's seventh episode, Trompe L'Oeil, it's revealed that Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright), seemingly the human head programmer of the titular theme park, is actually an android, just like those which populate the park (known as Hosts). Just after this reveal, the park's director Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), who has control over Bernard, gets him to violently kill Theresa (Sidse Babett Knudsen), WestWorld's operations director who had been trying to remove Ford from power.

This was easily WestWorld's Red Wedding moment, and it also neatly tied into some later-revealed backstory. It turned out that Bernard was actually a replica of Arnold (also Wright), Ford's late business partner who had tried to stop the park from opening, believing (correctly) that the whole operation was amoral. He'd tried to prevent the opening by getting Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), the most prominent of the hosts, to kill him alongside the other Hosts. Ford's regret over these events led to him trying to get the Hosts to become fully sentient, as Arnold had wanted.

WestWorld was always a very stupid show that mistakenly believed it was smart, but nevertheless, this twist was genuinely intelligent, a rare moment of brilliance from an otherwise pretentious, ill-judged drama.
