6. Lovecraft Country

Premiering sometime in 2020, HBO's Lovecraft Country is a gutwrenching road trip through segregationist 1950s America for a young black man, his uncle and best friend, on a search for his father while encountering nightmarish monsters from beyond space.

Jonathan Majors is Atticus, the lead, while Jurnee Smollett-Bell plays his friend Leti and Courtney B Vance plays George, his uncle. Atticus' father, the mysterious Montrose Freeman, is played by everyone's favourite hard-bitten snarler Michael K Williams.

Executive produced by J.J Abrams and Jordan Peele, who's made a second career for himself with exactly this kind of zeitgeist puncturing high concept horror in Get Out and Us on the big screen, the series is adapted from the brilliant novel by Matt Ruff and will be run by Misha Green, the creator of slavery period drama Underground.

Those are some eyebrow-raising credentials, and it's almost hard to imagine how it could go wrong, given the talent involved and the source material. Lovecraft Country may well be next year's American Gods.
