4 Times Doctor Who Mimicked Classic Mythology

1. Oedipus Rex€™s Running From Fate And Doctor Who

There aren€™t any parallels between the story Oedipus Rex and Doctor Who, except from one. It's the theme of not being able to escape fate and this is displayed multiple times. The first one that comes to mind is in the Fourth Doctor€™s regeneration ghost, the Watcher. While the Fourth Doctor never actively tries to escape it, it's always watching him€like fate. Creepy, right? This is actually a theme introduced in Greek mythology and it was often used in plays. Greeks believed that no matter what you do, you will never be able to escape your fate. The most famous example of this is in Oedipus Rex. Oedipus is told that he is doomed to kill his father and marry his mother. He leaves home to avoid this and ends up killing a man on the road without really thinking and... well, you all know where this is going. He then marries a woman whose husband died to find out he was adopted. What a twist! The other huge example of the Doctor running from fate is basically the entire sixth series involving the Eleventh Doctor. He spends most of the series trying to avoid going to his death, which in his case is being killed by River Song. It turns out that he can€™t escape it so he obviously finds a way to cheat it. However, the events transpire very differently than was originally expected - not unlike what happened to poor Oedipus. What do you think of this list? Are there any other examples of Doctor Who drawing inspiration from mythology? Let us know in the comments section below.
