5 Most Disturbing British TV Comedies

3. Human Remains

Before they were in the fluffy Gavin and Stacey, Julia Davis and Rob Brydon collaborated on this observational and unsettling series about married life. Human Remains is a series of faux-documentaries, focusing on a different couple every episode. There's Gordon and Sheila, the middle-aged swingers who run a B&B and can't wait for Sheila's sister to die so they can use the room she occupies for their hobby; Stephen and Michelle, the latter of whom buries herself in her obsession with Princess Diana so she can ignore her fiance's abuse; and Fonte and Barne, musicians whose differences are a little more than just creative. The majority of the characters, despite the semblance of normality most of them feign on the surface are desperately unhappy, whether they know it or not. The show is often poignant, sometimes revolting and always extremely funny. Despite being little-known and overshadowed by the later works of both comedians, Human Remains certainly left an impression. To this day, it is hailed by critics as one of the greatest, if most overlooked, British comedies ever.
