5 Times Black Mirror Came True

1. Citizen Rating System

Black Mirror Pizza Hut
Netflix

The most disturbing inclusion on this list due to its far-reaching societal consequences.

In the season three episode Nose Dive, citizens use technology from an eye implant to rate the people around them, and the encounters they have. People are ranked and their place in society is determined by their overall score, and those with a low score are ostracised. In the episode we follow Lacie (and her unendingly annoying laugh) as she strives to reach the rating of 4.5 to secure a new apartment. Along the way she makes a right hash of life and ends up a complete mess. It's a fun watch, but we'd never all be ranked and rated like that in real life surely?

Step right up China who have decided to adopt this concept in to policy. A 2014 document titled 'Planning Outline for the Construction of a Social Credit System' was published by the Chinese government. The Social Credit System is being drafted up to "measure trust" in China's 1.3 billion citizens, who will be ranked and rated by their peers. Currently the system is optional, but the Chinese government want to make it mandatory by 2020. Now that is scary.
