5 Women Who Need To Write For Doctor Who

4. Lucy Watkins

Just as there are those like Una McCormack who have written for Doctor Who, just not for television, there are also those who have written for television, just not Doctor Who. Obviously this list is somewhat extensive, but can be realistically narrowed down. To start with, BBC Cymru is now, for all intents and purposes, the BBC drama department, producing a whole range of other shows from Casualty to Merlin. This brings forward the name of Lucy Watkins, again just one name in a list of many candidates, but she tops that list due to the fact of how surprising it is that she hasn't already written for Doctor Who. Not only did she write four episodes of Merlin over a period of three years, but she held the pen behind Lancelot Du Lac, a somewhat pivotal episode. Just the latest retelling of the classic legend, not only are Arthur and Gwen now engaged, but the return of Lancelot (in a fashion even Mr. Darcy would envy) leads to the series fulfilling the most legendary love triangle in English history. Or fulfilled it as much as it could on a family TV show, at least. Having been trusted with and delivering such an important episode of a BBC series is a fine achievement, especially when added to Servant Of Two Masters, which later became the basis for an entire video game. Writing for Doctor Who is obviously a big responsibility, but with high praise from the likes of SFX magazine (and more importantly, the fans), this is something Watkins has proved she can handle.
