Avengers Disassembled, a 2004 story known for beginning Brian Michael Bendis's run on the book, is pretty much what it says on the tin: The Avengers team as most know it falls apart. At the centre of the events is the Scarlet Witch, who has fallen under a strange form of mind control.

After current lover Captain America chooses a very bad time to break up with her, Wanda loses the last of whatever control she had left, resulting in her temporarily allying herself with Doctor Doom and triggering a tragic series of events that results in the deaths of both Hawkeye, and former husband Vision.

Wanda is eventually placed in a coma and taken away by Magneto, who promises the Avengers that he will help her.

Avengers Disassembled began a string of big event stories in the Marvel Universe, eventually leading to the events of the world-changing House of M, which is perhaps the most well-known and most iconic Scarlet Witch story of all time.
