7 Fortunate Accidents That Ended Up Saving Doctor Who

5. Douglas Adams Being Forced To Rewrite City Of Death

Eleventh Doctor Old Man
BBC

City of Death was originally about rigging slots in 1928 to finance time travel experiments. However, the producers found they could use Paris so the script had to be changed.

The only problem was that writer David Fisher was getting divorced, so the BBC had to force - using a firehose filled with whiskey and coffee - Douglas Adams to do the rewrites instead. The result? One of the most bizarre and interesting story ideas mixed with the most cleverly written dialogue the show has ever produced.

A glorious high point in the series’ history, higher than Snoop Dogg on 4/20. A work of comedic genius, especially considering Adams was at the time pumped full of more chemicals than the aforementioned rapper himself.
