7 Fortunate Accidents That Ended Up Saving Doctor Who

1. Innumerable Rewrites Of The Celestial Toymaker

In this story, the First Doctor’s form is taken away by a being which is essentially every type of God in the Doctor Who universe smushed into one. What was supposed to happen is that when he’s reformed, he’s the Second Doctor.

It’s not just an awful idea. In fact, it could have killed the show more than the Doctor catapulting his TARDIS into the sun and getting an office job designing plugs. In terms of how bureaucracy could have ruined the show, it ranks up alongside Terry Nation almost not allowed to write “The Daleks”.

But the rewrites of the story got so complicated that the writes decided to can the idea. Instead, he had a few more stories before being finally written out in emergency rewrites of The Tenth Planet. But properly, and not in a way which would have destroyed the entire show. Thank God for that.
