8 Great TV Shows With Awful First Seasons
7. It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Hard to go back to the beginning of this seminal comedy series to see where it all began, considering that where it all began... kinda blows.
Not to say it was completely devoid of comedy, but you can tell from watching season 1 how much adding in Danny Devito's character Frank in season 2 saved the whole thing. And I do mean saved, as apparently America in 2005 shared the same sentiment toward the show, with tanking ratings resulting in FX threatening cancellation unless the writers brought in some star power and tightened up the cast chemistry.
So in came Danny Devito, a big fan of the show surprisingly, to tighten the group dynamic by introducing the insane character of Frank. This, along with the show deciding to commit to telling concepts like "realism" and "trying to make its heroes at all likable" to go ram it, helped to turn It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia into the 16-year long and counting powerhouse of a comedy it has become.
But to this day, the first season lives in infamy.
