8 Hated TV Episodes That Deserve Redemption

5. Advanced Introduction To Finality - Community

The Simpsons Principal And The Pauper
NBC

Community’s creator Dan Harmon was infamously fired from his own show at the end of season three and replaced by David Guarascio and Moses Port. This led to a fourth season that is generally regarded by fans and critics to be the weakest run of episodes Community ever put out. And, yes, some of these ill-judged attempts to capture that signature Harmon magic really do not deserve a rewatch.

But the season’s finale, Advanced Introduction to Finality, is worth another look. Jeff Winger, about to finally graduate from Greendale, is conflicted over what his next steps should be. Meanwhile, the evil study group travels from the darkest timeline to do battle with their good counterparts.

The episode’s plot is admittedly thin but the character work for Jeff is on strong form. His speech to the study group at his graduation about how much they mean to him is as touching as any other great Winger speech, and his fear of moving on from Greendale is a compelling emotional theme for the episode to hinge on.

The acting is also as strong as ever from the core cast, with every one of them portraying both their regular self and their darkest timeline version to comic perfection.
