8 Times Doctor Who Actors Played Characters That Destroyed Your Soul
2. Billie Piper In Secret Diary Of A Call Girl
Billie Piper shocked the nation to its very core back in 2006 when she left TARDIS life behind her - and seemingly for good - at the end of the second series. In the heartbreaking climactic events of Doomsday, her character Rose Tyler was imprisoned forevermore (or so everyone thought at the time, anyway...) in a parallel universe but it was what happened next that proved to be particularly controversial. The traumatising affair of being separated from the Doctor was always going to have long lasting psychological effects but nobody could have predicted just how much it would damage the former pop sensation. It's probably a good time to point out that obviously Billie wasn't playing Rose when she took on her next role as Belle de Jour in Secret Diary of a Call Girl, however that hasn't stopped some corners of the Doctor Who fandom - albeit the more delusional ones - theorising that the ITV2 series detailing the sexual liaisons of a high class London escort is actually some sort of loosely based post-watershed Rose Tyler spin off. Seriously. It doesn't help their overactive imaginations that Matt Smith pops up in Secret Diary at one point (more on that next) but you can see why Billie's role in the controversial drama got as many tongues wagging as it did. She left the Saturday teatime confines of Doctor Who to try new things as an actress and she couldn't have got any further from playing a shop girl turned Earth defender if she'd tried. To cut a long, and not to mention rather graphic, story short, she went from fighting Daleks, battling Cybermen and absorbing the energies of the time vortex to dressing up in latex, getting naked at every opportunity and wastefully throwing copious amounts of food at her clients (it's called 'sploshing' if you want to get technical). It was all handled tastefully, though, and the story is pretty good if you can get over the fact that you're basically watching Rose Tyler riding a horny businessman like a horse. It was bad enough when her clients were unknown actors but then something happened which is still haunting Doctor Who fans to this very day. Read on to find out what, if you dare...
