To date, four seasons of Luther have aired (and a fifth is imminent), but if star Idris Elba is to be believed, the detective will also be making the jump to the big screen in the near future.

Chatting to the press at the launch of the new series, Elba confirmed (via JoBlo) that a Luther movie is in the works, hinting that the film will take cues from the likes of Se7en, and Along Came A Spider:

"We are really advancing on getting a movie version up on the screen. Neil is beavering away on writing this thing, and I think the remit for the film is to scale it up. Luther has all the ingredients to echo those classic films of the '90s like Se7en and Along Came A Spider and I think what we would like to do is use that blueprint to create Luther the film."

While the fact that series creator Neil Cross is working on a story doesn't necessarily mean the film will see the light of day, Elba's (and the show's) growing popularity definitely helps. The actor also teased that the fifth series would set up a movie, a possible indicator that firm plans are already in place.

Whatever happens, Luther fans still have plenty more of the character to look forward to, with series five premiering on New Year's Day 2019. Not long now...

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
