Star Trek has paved the way in screen representation since its very beginning, with the casting of Nichelle Nichols as a black, female expert in her field being way ahead of its time. Discovery will keep up this grand tradition, with a talented cast bringing a diverse collection of characters to life.

Chinese Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh (of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) will play Captain Georgiou of the U.S.S. Shenzhou, according to Deadline. There will also be an openly gay male among the core crew, and a British doctor character too.

Chris Obi, Mary Chieffo and Shazad Latif have signed up to play Klingons, and the Discovery's science officers will be brought to life by RENT star Anthony Rapp and Hellboy/Pan's Labyrinth legend Doug Jones. Jones' one is an alien, meaning he'll probably be under heavy prosthetics once again.

So Discovery's collection of characters covers a variety of races, sexualities and even species. Although this show will change a lot about Star Trek TV series - how many episodes they need to have, where they air, who the lead character can be - it won't change the all-inclusive progressiveness that defined The Original Series back in the 1960s. But will it boldly go onto your watch-list?
