Her father was a doctor and when Joan graduated from Barnard College with a degree in English literature and anthropology, it was expected that she would follow in the footsteps of her upwardly mobile parents and find a respectable profession and husband. Not for the last time, Joan had other ideas. She fell in love with the theatre at an early age and harboured dreams of seeing her name in lights, and made the move to New York City in the hope of becoming a professional actress. Rivers worked as a tour guide, as a proof-reader, a fashion consultant and also took on various secretarial roles as she sought out opportunities to indulge her passion. An off-Broadway play called Driftwood saw her perform alongside a young Barbra Streisand the two had to kiss as part of the action, and Rivers would later describe Streisand as being all tongue but didnt manage to secure a break-through role. In fact, the only reason she went into comedy was to keep alive her dream of acting. Rivers always considered herself an actress, commenting later in life that she felt she was an actress playing a comedienne, but she would soon find an unexpected path to fame.
