Doctor Who: The Star Beast Review - 9 Ups And 3 Downs

5. UP - A Snazzy New Sonic

We can already tell that this is going to be a polarising one, but hot take: we like the sonic screwdriver upgrades.

This tool, with the exception of a short stint as a pair of sunglasses, hasn’t really changed a lot since its inception – a new sonic tends to entail a new handle and a different coloured swooshy light, but not this time.

Now, it produces holographic displays, and having learned from the Ninth Doctor’s mistakes, can actually resonate mortar now. Most surprising, however, was the ability to draw shapes in the air like a Disney channel wand ident, and create hard light barriers.

We’re not mad at this – it’s long overdue that the show gave the Doctor some new gadgets. We reckon they’ll break this sonic before long anyway, as it may be just a little too overpowered.
