Agents Of SHIELD: 10 Best Villains
1. Grant Ward
When the series first kicked off, it was hard to deny that Agent Ward's general lack of personality made him the least endearing of all the members on the team. But when the game-changing events of The Winter Soldier occurred, Ward's unassumingly bland personality was revealed as the perfect ruse that made the revelation he was HYDRA all along all the more jaw-dropping.
From that point on, Ward remained a constant threat to the team he betrayed, whether it was in working with John Garrett for the remainder of the first season, joining forces with HYDRA leaders like Daniel Whitehall and Gideon Malick, scheming with Agent 33, or even just acting out on his own, like assassinating Rosalind just to make Coulson suffer.
Through it all, Brett Dalton relished every moment, helping turn Ward into a character whose complexities always made him unpredictable, and one whose more than welcome comeuppances made seeing what he would do next as a result constantly entertaining. When Coulson finally put him down once and for all, it came as a welcome relief at just the right time for the character to go out, and his absence - even if Dalton himself got to play "Ward" just a bit longer thanks to Hive - will undoubtedly be felt when season four arrives without him around to keep causing problems for the team.
