Agents Of SHIELD: 10 Best Villains

The addition of Kyle MacLachlan to the show's second year turned out to be a stroke of genius. As Skye/Daisy's tortured father Calvin Johnson, MacLachlan elevated a character who could've been one-note into one of the most fascinating and engaging ones, villain or otherwise, the show has put forth yet, even with a whole season now having passed since fans last saw him.

Despite his gleeful villainy and antagonism towards the team, what made Cal work so well was the character's innate earnestness and genuine desire to reunite the family he'd long lost, arming his motivations with a ton of heart even if they were punctuated by fits of rage. Though Jiaying manipulated his emotions to serve her own purposes, Cal spent the second half of the season proving definitively he was a good man at heart, going so far as to forever split the very family he'd spent so long fighting to get back together simply to keep his daughter from being the one to kill her own mother.

In comparison to most of the MCU's big and small screen villains, who tend to end up dead or imprisoned, Cal received a bittersweet ending, with the TAHITI program being used to wipe away his memories and give him a new life as a veterinarian, the weight of years of tragedy put upon him finally lifted off his shoulders for good.
