Agents Of SHIELD: 10 Reasons Season 2 Is A Massive Improvement
7. Fitz And Simmons Developed
More light relief than anything else for a lot of Season 1, this pair of boffins have come into their own in Season 2, feeling finally like real people. The end of Season 1 had Ward jettison the pair into the sea in a watery tomb; they escaped but Fitz had suffered brain damage owing to oxygen deprivation. Having declared his feelings for Jemma and not had them reciprocated, Fitz went into a downward spiral. Simmons asked to go undercover. The actors have benefitted massively this season from being given more to do than just be chirpy. Simmons had shown she can lie as she worked undercover at HYDRA and has even started wielding around an icer. Fitz, meanwhile, has had to come back from unrequited love and diminished abilities. To cope, he started imagining that the old Simmons was with him in the lab and he then started a tentative friendship with new boy Mack. When Simmons returned, the interplay between them has been well judged, a mix of warmth and awkwardness. The pair were always likeable but now the viewer can invest in them as rounded people too.
