Ahsoka Episode 1 Review - 7 Ups & 2 Downs
3. Up - Strong Performances All Around
Unlike with most of the live-action Star Wars series so far, most of the characters that appeared in Ahsoka's first episode have already been established. Though Boba-Fett, Andor, and Obi-Wan had one or two established characters - usually just the titular protagonist (plus Darth Vader in Obi-Wan’s case) - almost everyone in the first episode of Ahsoka has appeared before.
This brings with it some form of weight and expectation, to portray a character already beloved by many. However, the cast of the series hit the ground running in the pilot.
In particular, Rosario Dawson and Natasha Liu Bordizzo were exceptional, as was the return of David Tennant to the role of Huyang. The guy just makes anything he is in automatically better, and this was no different. The few newcomers also made an impression, most notably the late Ray Stevenson’s Baylan Skoll. The former Jedi cut a tremendous and intimidating figure from the beginning, and his role in this story will be very interesting to see.
Hopefully, as the series progresses these performances can be added to by Lars Mikkelsen and Eman Esfandi.
