4. But There Will Be Changes To The Comics

While they'll be sticking to the basic premise, and Rogen and Goldberg are huge fans of the comics, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that there will be some changes made for TV. That's the case with pretty much any adaptation, for a variety of reasons, but it's probably going to be necessary for Preacher in order to make it appeal to a wider audience, and keep the narrative in check, as TV obviously works differently to the page.

Already from the trailers it looks as though the appearance of the world has changed, it's not as hyper-stylised or comic booky, and there'll be things like sexual situations that they'll simply have to tone down. Meanwhile, the show will start in a different place to the comic, and spend more time with Custer before his mission begins.

As they explained to EW, this wasn't always Rogen and Goldberg's plan. They'd initially set about doing an almost frame-for-frame adaptation, but then "totally f**king hurled it." The reason for this was explained by Caitlin:

"Narratively, it starts at 110 miles an hour. I don’t know how you tell that story in the narrative television form. So, came up with the idea that we would see Jesse as a preacher — because he’s only very briefly a preacher in the comic, and then he’s just kind of a badass guy in a preacher collar. We thought there would be an opportunity to see someone try to do their job, be sort of the spiritual sheriff for the town. There’s so many big set pieces and crazy, over-the-wall violence, comedy, stuff like that. We wanted to ground it in something familiar, so that it didn’t feel like a bad acid trip.”
