American Horror Story: 10 Scariest Moments

5. The Zombie Assault On The Academy (Coven)

Zombies. Why did it have to be zombies? The third season of American Horror Story featured some impressive horror trope moments amidst the black humour and supernatural elements, including the invocation of a zombie army by voodoo queen Marie Laveau (an indomitable Angela Bassett), to attack the students of Miss Robichaux's Academy on Halloween. With their leaders scattered thanks to a power vacuum and a brutal acid attack on headmistress Cordelia, rendering both her and Supreme mother Fiona (Jessica Lange) MIA, the girls were forced to scramble to survive, and LaLaurie faced her horrific treatment of her daughters, now zombie horde slaves. The sequence, which played over that year's Hallowe'en two-parter, gave viewers some truly gruesome moments, such as the hapless trick-or-treaters getting snacked on, or the terrifying beats as Nan (Jamie Brewer) and an injured Luke (Alexander Dreymon) trying to escape inside for safety. Fortunately, new girl Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) proved her salt by channeling her inner Ash Williams and letting loose a chainsaw on the zombie horde, unleashing a powerful, subconscious power display (one strong enough to shatter Laveau's control). Even though she was woefully underused the rest of the season, Zoe had a crowning moment of gore-splattered glory, and the sequence gave everyone nightmares for the rest of the week.
