6. Cheers (1982)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-mi0r0LpXo The trials and tribulations of Ted Danson running a bar in Irish American Boston while trying to romance Kirsty Alley are legendary. Eleven series of the most highly rated US show ever made (sorry, Friends fans, it's bloody true and proud of it) you can probably consider Cheers in musical terms in much the same way as Genesis. While separately they're highly talented and respected actors who have created works of brilliance, together, they are unbeatable and have created amazing results that astonish the masses. Or something to that effect. What can possibly be said about the theme of this program that hasn't already been said? Written and performed by Gary Portnoy and co-written with Judy Hart Angelo, lent its famous refrain, "Where Everybody Knows Your Name", as the show's tagline and also featured an incredible send up performance in the Simpsons as the weirdly named 'Flamin Moes.' Although the myth precedes to gain fame, Portnoy did not in fact write 'All Out Of Love' although he did write a number of songs for the band Air Supply around the same time. Angelo, the song's co-writer, had never written anything before turning attention to this track and knew Portnoy through their mutual theater work. Portnoy and Angelo wrote three separate songs, only one of which was accepted released on Vinyl as a single in 1983. Although the producers liked the song they didn't originally want Portnoy to record it, perhaps due to the expense, instead focusing on finding other singers before relenting and agreeing to let him perform his own version in August 1982. Kipp Lennon (of the band Venice) sang the lyrics for Flamin' Moe's because of his aural likeness to Portnoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LkH-1JiA-E
