Batman: The Animated Series: 10 Most Disturbing Episodes
3. Perchance To Dream
This episode sees Bruce Wayne waking up in an idyllic world where everything he could have ever wished for has come true. His parents are alive, he's engaged to Selina Kyle (who doesn't spend her nights running around in a cat suit) - there's even another Batman protecting Gotham.
Confused at first, Bruce tries to figure out what's going on, but he quickly comes to embrace his new life. For the first time since he was a child, he can actually be happy.
This newfound happiness doesn't last though, as Bruce begins to see signs that something is horribly wrong. Gradually he becomes more and more unhinged, and eventually resolves to discover just what is happening to him.
It's always unnerving to see a man who is usually so cool in the face of danger becoming so frantic. It's one of those rare times when Bruce isn't in control and it leaves us feeling every bit as off-kilter as he does. He's essentially gaslit into believing that the memories of his real life are all false, tricking him into a false feeling of happiness.
Things reach an intense climax when Bruce climbs to the top of a cemetery bell tower in the middle of a storm, where he finally confronts Batman himself in an heart-pounding fight for his very mind. The entire sequence is just insane, with dark, atmospheric visuals and a deep dive into Bruce's psychology.
