Batman v Superman v Doctor Who: 10 Heroic Connections

3. Michael Gough - Alfred Pennyworth/The Celestial Toymaker

Alfred And Vicki Vale In Batman The late, great Michael Gough had a long and diverse acting career, going from Ealing Comedy to Hammer Horror and becoming lodged in the minds of many an impressionable young viewer as a result. One of these was Tim Burton, who gave Gough some choice roles in the later stages of his life, most famously as Alfred in Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). As Bruce Waynes came and went, Alfred stayed loyal to the ever-worsening franchise, serving his last cup of tea in Batman & Robin in 1997. Showing all the dedication required for the hardy servant, Gough reprised the part for Dirk Maggs' Knightfall on radio and finally pocketed a chunk of change for a series of ads showcasing a vehicle tracking product in 2001. Being a versatile British character performer he was perfect for Doctor Who, and took on a key role - the evil genius of the title in The Celestial Toymaker, fighting William Hartnell's Doctor in 1966. He returned years later as Time Lord Councillor Hedin, acolyte of Omega in Arc Of Infinity starring Peter Davison in 1983 and very nearly resurrected the Toymaker for aborted Colin Baker story The Nightmare Fair.
