Better Call Saul: 10 Things You Only Notice Rewatching Season 1
7. Beware Tarantulas
This is a subtle bit of foreshadowing, the sort of thing that could feel like an offhand character quirk that adds colour to a scene. It's only in rewatching both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul Season 1 that the meaning of this statement becomes much deeper and darker. In one of Season 1's stand-out episodes, viewers are given Mike's origin story - a corrupt Philadelphia cop, whose actions inadvertently led to the death of his son, Matty.
After making things right by killing the two corrupt cops that murdered Matt, Mike makes the decision to move out to Albuquerque. Telling a bartender of his plans to leave Philadelphia, he's warned to watch out for tarantulas. Of course, this is a subtle reference to the devastating climax of Mike, Walter, Jess and Todd's train heist in Breaking Bad.
In a grim bit of history repeating, another father loses their son when a kid witnesses the heist while hunting for tarantulas, and Todd shoots him dead. It's just one of numerous subtle, but thematically rich flourishes in the writing of Better Call Saul that makes for rewarding rewatches.
