After Lester smashes his own face into a window by accident, he finds himself in the emergency room. Waiting next to him is Malvo; quietly watching Lester. After politely asking for a sip but then taking Lesters entire drink, he engages Lester in conversation. Malvo teases the details of Lesters run in with bully Sam Hess from him. I would have killed that man, is Malvos ice-cold response. This was the moment that Lesters life changed. His chance meeting with Malvo unleashed his dark side, forcing him to dwell on the anger within. Malvos ability to affect people is magnificent, and poor old Lester Nygaard (beautifully played by Martin Freeman) was doomed from this very first meeting.
