Black Mirror Season 6: Every Episode Ranked Worst To Best
4. Episode 5 - Demon 79
Wait, another episode with nothing to do with technology? Is this Black Mirror or Cabinet of Curiosities? *Sigh* Well, at least this episode isn't half bad, unlike the previous entry.
Demon 79 follows a sales assistant named Needa (Anjana Vasan) in late 70s England. Needa spends her time suffering from boredom in her job and racism from her colleagues/customers. But, her life is soon flipped upside down after she is drawn into a pact with a demon and forced to kill three people to prevent the upcoming apocalypse.
Let's start with the positives. Firstly, Vasan does a great job in the leading role, filling Needa with a likeable underdog energy and delivering a strong character arc. Additionally, the humour blends perfectly with the twisted violence. However, despite the plus points, the episode does have a major problem.
The 70s setting robs Demon 79 of any contemporary satire, leaving a cookie-cutter message about the prejudice of a time that is well-documented for its outdated views. This is a massive missed opportunity, as the Cold War setting could have been used for some fascinating parallels to the current political climate. A great Black Mirror episode could use this time period to its advantage, but this one treats it like an afterthought.
Ultimately it's a decent watch but falls flat compared to the rest of the show.
