11. Lying As An Art Form

Comedian Chris Rock once joked that men lie so much, it's like a language to them. If you look carefully, you might see Walter Hartwell White over there in the corner nodding with a big grin on his face. What was pathologically obnoxious about Walter was his compulsive lying to his family even when he didn't have to. A classic example is the scene that takes place in the hospital shortly after Hank is shot. Jesse calls Walt on the hospital phone to bitch about their meth-cooking schedule. Walt takes the call and pretends it's the White family's priest or minister. Skyler walks up to discuss getting breakfast, and after Walt hangs up, he slaps a world-class disingenuous smile on his face and smarmy lying tone in his voice and asks Skyler, "Do you know who that was?" Her withering look spoke volumes about just how little of his bullshit she believed anymore. And frankly, Walt's "Do you know who that was?" was phony enough to spur many of we hardcore fans to throw up in our mouth a little. Walt was the indisputable King of Bullshit and, throughout the series, he lied, lied, lied, even when the truth would have been harmless and ultimately more convincing to his family. Skyler ultimately became a human Walter White lie detector, but Walt kept it up...until the last episode when he admitted he cooked meth because he "liked it." This was one of the only truthful moments in his two-years of meth-cooking "for his family."
