Characters mirroring those around them is a big theme in Breaking Bad. Whilst Gus Fring represents everything Walt wants to be (and eventually thinks he is), it's Mike Ehrmantraut who hits closer to home.

A former cop dedicated to protecting and providing for his widow daughter-in-law and his young granddaughter, Mike turns to crime to pay the bills, eventually finding himself gainfully employed to Gus as his trusted right-hand man.

Though it's clear Mike has a good soul, it's even clearer that he's not the man he once was, but will still do anything to protect those closest to him. Tragic and uncompromising, Mike is another man struck down by Walt's ego, and another who never quite achieves what he set out to do.
