Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Every Season 7 Episode Ranked Worst To Best
8. Ep. 10: Admiral Peralta
Everybody knows that Jake has daddy issues, so it makes sense that with his own child on the way, he would fear following in his father's footsteps. This episode explores those fears in some of the most hilarious, yet heartfelt moments possible.
With the introduction of Jake's paternal grandfather - the titular Admiral Walter Peralta - it's learned that there's a long history of poor parenting in the Peralta family, with bad blood running between Walter and Jake's dad, Roger. Despite being such a flawed human being, it's always such a delight to see Roger return, played by the brilliant Bradley Whitford. Here the dynamic between the three generations of Peralta men is great fun to watch, with the typically immature Jake having to step up and be the adult of the group.
From Jake getting punched in the face, to Roger accidentally cutting his finger off, there are a lot of great comedic moments, but at its heart this is a story about Jake facing his fears of fatherhood. Of course, the biggest comedic set-piece comes when Jake and Amy's gender-reveal cake is ruined, forcing the three Peraltas to clean it up "Bird Box" style, so as to avoid seeing the colour inside the cake.
Even the B and C plots are great, with Holt tutoring terry for his audition as an NYPD flautist proving some stand-out moments, and Hitchcock and Scully are given a rare chance to be heroes. It's a fantastic episode, filled with humour and heart.
