Some of the best Buffy characters didn't even show up in the first season...

There are many reasons why people adore Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Fans love the premise, the mishmash of genres, the plot twists, the scares, and – of course – the characters.

In the first season, we’re introduced to many core characters, including Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles. These four heroes are at the centre of the entire show, but there’s plenty of other great characters who turn up later on.

The story evolves with every season, and the new faces are key to this evolution. As well as the constant onslaught of villains, the Scooby Gang are aided by a range of heroes as they fight to defend Sunnydale. And though Buffy will always be the most powerful protagonist, these new companions are vital to the gang’s success.

What’s more, many of the characters who are introduced after Season One undertake fascinating journeys. They morph between heroism and villainy depending on which season you’re watching, and these changes are always fascinating to experience.

Whilst Season One does a terrific job at introducing us to the main four, the following characters are all terrific additions to the Buffyverse.

10. Caleb

The last season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer divides opinion. Some fans see it as a fitting end to a brilliant show, while others complain about the tedious nature of the Potential Slayer storyline.

The truth is somewhere in the middle. But even those who are sceptical about the final season can't deny how great Caleb is. This terrifying villain crops up in the eighteenth episode, and as the physical embodiment of the First Evil, he's one of the most formidable characters in the show.

He's so powerful that he has no trouble taking on the gang when they attack the vineyard. As well as murdering several Potential Slayers, he also crushes Xander's left eye. Only with the help of the Scythe does Buffy manage to bring him down in the final episode.

But it's Caleb's dialogue and demeanour that makes him truly terrifying. Nathan Fillion nails his performance, and you never doubt you're watching a psychopathic priest relishing in the slaughter of his victims.

It's just a shame he's only featured in five episodes.
