Xander's unrequited crush on Buffy is at its strongest and most obvious during the first season. For the most part, it is all harmless puppy love, with Buffy seemingly unaware that her friend has feelings for her at all until towards the end of the season. When she is made aware, Buffy tries to let him down gently, believing he will eventually get over it.

Xander's so-called harmless crush takes a chilling turn in the show's sixth episode, The Pack, when Xander and a group of students known as Sunnydale High’s bad crowd are possessed by the spirits of a pack of hyenas. The spirits turn their hosts into little more than animals, heightening their strength, and their food and mating urges.

Once Buffy realises that something is truly wrong with Xander, she hurries to warn him, not realising that she will become his next target. Xander overpowers Buffy and attempts to rape her. She is only saved by the fact that her Slayer strength allows her to fight him off.

Though his possession means Xander cannot truly be blamed, it is still a chilling scene to watch, and one Xander counts among his own worst moments.
