20 TV Shows That Were Cancelled In 2025

17. Dexter: Original Sin

Poker Face Cancelled
Paramount

Dexter is a franchise that just won't die - no matter how wildly inconsistent its quality has been, fans just keep showing up to support it.

And so it was a genuine surprise that Showtime made the decision to cancel Dexter: Original Sin after just a single season, no matter that it became their most-streamed premiere in history at the time, and continued to perform well enough to be renewed for season two back in April.

Yet five months later, Showtime reneged on this announcement, announcing that the second season had been canned as a strategic decision following the Paramount-Skydance merger, in order to focus on the Dexter sequel series Dexter: Resurrection instead.

And in fairness, Dexter: Resurrection was a far better show than Original Sin and this was reflected in its stronger viewing figures, resulting in it swiftly getting a season two renewal.

All the same, Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips bluntly criticised Showtime's decision to un-renew Original Sin, putting him in the awkward position of having to break the news to his cast and crew.

Phillips stated that he'd already mapped out seasons worth of material for Dexter's origin story, most of which fans will presumably never get to see.
