Community: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best
3. Season 1
Season 1 of Community is where it all began. From the moment the Dean accidentally insulted his new batch of students, fans could tell that this sitcom (and occasional sitcom parody) would be something special.
However, as it was just starting out, the show lacked some of Community's weirder elements that it eventually became known for. Season 1's wackiest episodes, such as the Scorsese-themed Contemporary American Poultry and the paintball adventure Modern Warfare, are great, but are few and far between. Season 1 of Community is, for the most part, a normal sitcom.
That said, Community makes for a great normal sitcom. Though it takes some time for each character to become fleshed out, they all prove to have more depth than the Pilot would suggest, and make for compelling protagonists throughout the following five seasons (and maybe a movie.) This season also utilizes SeƱor Chang the best. Ken Jeong's unhinged Spanish professor who doesn't know Spanish steals nearly every scene he appears in.
Despite not being as crazy as some of the later seasons, Season 1 paves the way for said craziness. No paintball episode can happen without Modern Warfare, and some of the more bizarre concept episodes won't carry the same emotional weight without some of the setup and development from the show's early days. While Season 1 feels more like the shows Community parodies at times than Community itself, it still proves to be really funny when it's at its least weird.
