1. Karen McDonald (Suranne Jones)
Steve McDonald has always been unlucky in love. He's married a series of crazed brides in the past, such as the unhinged murderess Tracy Barlow and off-the-rails Becky Granger, but they were nothing compared to Karen (Suranne Jones). Appearing in the soap between 2000-04, Karen was responsible for some of the soap's most action-packed scenes, including legendary spats with Tracy after realising she slept with her husband while they were separated. This feud escalates when it is later revealed Steve is the father of Tracy's newborn child, Amy, as the result of the affair, which hurts Karen even more given that she is unable to have children herself. Karen left the street on Christmas Day 2004 while actress Jones has appeared in a series of ITV dramas since. We'd love it if she and her stilettos returned to the cobbles, though, because Steve McDonald's life wouldn't be complete without a strong, feisty woman ruining his life.
