Cursed Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

3. The Fantastic Supporting Cast

Netflix

The show's supporting cast deserves a lot of credit for keeping things chugging along even when the aforementioned Netflix bloat begins to set in.

Fantastic Scottish actor Peter Mullan is a subdued hoot as Father Carden, the insidious head of the Red Paladins, while Devon Terrell delivers an agreeably left-field interpretation of Arthur that's quite unlike any other we've ever seen.

In terms of female characters, the easy highlight isn't so much Nimue herself but Shalom Brune-Franklin's Sister Igraine, a character who amounts to far, far more than she initially seems - but the less said about that, the better.

But the season highlight is surely Gustaf Skarsgård's terrific performance as Merlin. Though we've seen the character done to death on screen over the years, Skarsgård's interpretation of the destitute wizard feels fresh and unpredictable, which is no small feat.

Collectively, it's clear that nobody among the cast is just phoning things in here, ensuring that even when the storytelling feels a little too stock for its own good, there's always a performance that begs viewer attention.
