6. Army of Ghosts/ Doomsday
Written by Russell T. Davies Series 2 Episodes 12 & 13 For many people I think this is the best of the Doctor Who finales. The pure, raw emotion of Doomsday is incredibly moving, while managing not to be quite so morbid and unpleasant as 'The Angels Take Manhattan'. For New Who fans, Rose was our first love and the most important woman in the Doctor's life, so something massive was required to tear her apart from our hero. One of the best ways to experience the tear-jerking tragedy (except by watching the episode of course) is listening to the exquisite track 'Doomsday' from the Series 1 and 2 soundtrack, which really surmises the incredible work that Murray Gold put into reflecting the overwhelming tragedy of the episode it's utterly fantastic, and adds many more dimensions to the episode just by itself. Even if you take away the incredible conclusion to the Rose/Doctor story-line you still have the brilliantly wacky confrontation between the Daleks and the Cybermen. It must be the dream of any child whose life and imagination has been shaped by Doctor Who to see these two behemoths of the monster world fighting each other. There must have been bets taken and fan-fictions written about who would win in this epic battle and we finally get to see that the Daleks would sweep the Cybermen aside like crumbs from a table (well at least we know now.) There's a pure, ephemeral joy to a Russell T. Davies finale that always makes the series you've just watched feel like the most important story that you've ever seen, and the multi-universe massacre that is Doomsday set a high standard for the following David Tennant finales to live up to.
