9. "Which One Of You Said That?" "...Me."
Shortly before the episode aired, Neil Gaiman was full of praise for Matt Smith's performance in 'Nightmare in Silver', claiming that he was finding new things to do with the role three years into it. And watching his performance as the Cyber Controller, it's hard to argue with that. Whilst this isn't actually the Doctor, it's hard to tell at times which Matt's Matt. He may have had his head invaded by a cyborg, but this feels like the Doctor is still the villain, skipping through his incarnations at whim and manipulating Clara. The scream of "They're here!" is absolutely chilling, and the way Matt plays it - half classic Bond villain, half twisted madman - really suggests that the Cyber Controller's drawing more evil from the Doctor than we think. Gaiman was right: it's one of Matt's greatest episodes in the role, and fantastic example of him subverting a character he's so brilliantly portrayed.
