Doctor Who: 10 Steps To Falling In Love With Peter Capaldi

6. Getting To Know You

At the end of Deep Breath Matt Smith himself pleaded with us all the way from the past in Trenzalore: €œfor me, help him, go on. And don€™t be afraid€. However scared Clara was, the new Doctor was more scared than anything she could imagine. A beautiful scene, perfectly acted by all and served as a bridge to the past as well as a metaphor for the terror that no doubt wracked Peter Capaldi as he took on the role. €œYou can€™t see me can you? You look at me, and you can€™t see me. Have you any idea what that€™s like?€ It was a touching and provocative line. Audiences old and young, those used to a change in Time Lord and those for whom this was their first time were challenged as one; €œgive him a chance€. He is still the same man, but a different person. To paraphrase Matt Smith€™s lines, that€™s fine, as long as he remembers who he used to be. Over the course of the next few episodes more of this new personality emerged and, in many ways, softened that first impression. Were we too quick to judge? Was there more to this man than the independent eyebrows and a brusk attitude?

I.T. Consultant, technophile and Doctor Who fan. I like to talk about tech, take films apart and make excuses for Doctor Who's continuity errors. No other show has the power to make me feel like a big kid.
