Doctor Who Series 8: 10 Moments We're Most Looking Forward To

5. Morality Is Malfunction €“ Episode 2

Clips featured on a recent BBC news report revealed that the character at the core of Episode 2 is a Dalek. But before you start thinking €œOh no, not again€, we€™re in for something different this year. Because this is, as the Doctor says when he first sees it €œA Dalek so damaged it turned good€. And it€™s the point where that clip ends that we really want to see. In what way is this Dalek good? What€™s it capable of? And after his surprisingly calm analysis, how€™s the Doctor going to deal with it? We€™ve seen Daleks with morality before (as early as 1967) but it€™s still a very rare thing and has so much potential. For both the Doctor and the Dalek. Especially with the €œI can see into your soul€ teaser suggesting that the damaged Dalek will jolt between good and evil, and that Daleks who develop emotions either don€™t tend to take it very well, or find themselves on the hit list of other Daleks. Another factor that helps this scene create a lot of anticipation is that there are a lot of psychological horror-focussed directions it can go in. And since pretty much all of this is coming from the mind of Phil Ford (co-writer of the chilling The Waters Of Mars), we might be in for a much darker Dalek story than usual.
