Doctor Who Series 8: 10 Moments We're Most Looking Forward To
4. UNIT Vs The Cybermen Episode 11/12
Although UNIT has had a semi-regular presence since their revamp in 2012s The Power Of Three; their overall characterisation has been one of science leads, and only smaller groups of soldiers have been seen without the need to do any fighting. Essentially this will be the first time we see UNIT fighting a full-scale battle since The Poison Sky in 2008. Its also going to be the first Cyberman mass invasion story since The Next Doctor (also 2008), bringing two long neglected aspects of Doctor Who together in one story and potentially creating some excellent urban warfare sequences. While the invasion of London scenario did become somewhat overplayed during the Russell T. Davies era, it has been largely ignored by Steven Moffat and gap of several years since this type of story was fully played out gives it more than a good chance of being a strong sequence and pair of episodes. Also, guest director Rachel Talalays experience in action films and sci-fi on both sides of the Atlantic is likely to give the story a different influence than Doctor Whos usual pool of directors, and hopefully make it feel like its own distinct adventure. Something which may be needed to avoid drawing too much inspiration from previous Cyberman invasion stories.
